The American Southwest has long attracted artists eager to record its magnificent forms, light, and spirit. Photographers such as Timothy O'Sullivan, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Paul Strand, Eliot Porter, Laura Gilpin, and contemporary master David Michael Kennedy have traveled the deserts and mountains of New Mexico to make images of this magical place.

David's approach to landscape photography focuses on the photographer's relationship to the land. Through long but enjoyable hours exploring and photographing the New Mexico landscape and the spirit that lives within it, participants arrive at their own personal discovery and visual interpretation of Mother Earth. On daily field trips down back roads, we search for the elusive magic that lies beyond the obvious. David prefers to “chase the light” rather than plan a definite itinerary, because you never know how New Mexico's ever-changing weather will affect the light and the skies. The schedule includes discussions of technical information, demonstrations, and critiques, as well as David's one-on-one sessions with each participant.

Instructor(s)

David Michael Kennedy is a talented photographer and a gifted and caring teacher. He attended Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, where he acquired the technical mastery that allows him to give his intuition free reign. Subsequently, he spent 18 years as a successful professional photographer in New York City, shooting portraits of such celebrities as Bob Dylan, Mike Tyson, Rachel Rosenthal, Debby Harry, and Isaac Stern, and photographing award-winning album covers for major record labels. His work has appeared in magazines including New York, Omni, Rolling Stone, Spin, Time, and Working Woman.

In 1987, David moved to New Mexico to concentrate on more personal work. Although he occasionally accepts commercial assignments, most of his time is devoted to fine-art photography. David is also a master of the palladium/platinum printing process. He is represented by several galleries internationally and by the Andrew Smith Gallery in Santa Fe. This is David's 10th year teaching at The Workshops. His Web site address is www.davidmichaelkennedy.com.
